All 37 Stockport food businesses rated in September scored 5. The borough has no zero-rated premises, and 10 sit on a 1: three of them in Reddish.

Every food business in Stockport given a hygiene rating in September scored the top mark of 5. There are 37 of them on the Food Standards Agency register, which we read this morning (FSA food hygiene ratings, Stockport). There were no fours, threes or anything lower.

Across the whole borough, nobody is on a zero. Ten businesses are rated 1, and three of those are in Reddish.

A 5 means hygiene standards are very good. A 1 means major improvement is necessary. A rating is a snapshot of what an officer found on the day of the inspection, not a verdict on the food.

Ten more are small caterers whose addresses the register does not publish, usually because they work from home. The register gives only their postcode district:

  • SK5: Sweet Hart and Cabasa Fresh
  • SK7: Bramhall Bake Box, My Sen Den, Foxton Rose Cakes and Izah Cakes
  • SK8: Caribbean Flavas / Flavas Street Kitchen, Crumbship Bakehouse, Slimming World Franchise

By type, the 37 break down as 11 home and other caterers, six nurseries and care homes, five restaurants and cafes, five takeaways, five shops, two pubs, two schools and one small food manufacturer.

The wider register: no zeros, 40 below a 3

Stockport Council’s register holds 2,709 entries. Of those, 323 are exempt, such as newsagents selling only wrapped goods, and 289 are waiting for a first inspection. That leaves 2,097 businesses with a published rating.

A business may have made improvements since its inspection. The rating only changes after an officer inspects again.

A month of fives does not mean no low scores were given

September’s count of 37 is lower than August’s 52, and the month is probably not complete yet. A business has 21 days from being told its rating to appeal, and the council publishes the rating once that window has passed. A business can also ask for early publication. So some September inspections may still appear, and not all of them will be fives.

Every business has three safeguards under the scheme (Food Standards Agency guidance for businesses):

  • it can appeal to the council within 21 days of being told its rating
  • it can publish a right to reply alongside the rating
  • it can ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements

What it means for you

  • Check before you order. Every rating, with the inspection date, is on the FSA register. In England businesses do not have to display their sticker, so the register is the reliable place to look.
  • Low does not mean dangerous today. A 1 tells you what the officer found on the day. Look at the date: a rating from 2024 says less about the kitchen now than one from August.
  • Report a problem. If you see something wrong in a food business, you can report it to the FSA, which passes it to Stockport Council’s food safety team.

All figures are from the FSA register as read on 5 October 2026 and will change as new inspections are published.
